Lake Jocassee from a high overlook: deep green-blue water winding between steep, forested mountain ridges.

Why Jocassee

Clear water, mountain walls, and waterfalls only a boat can reach

Jocassee doesn’t look like the other lakes in the Upstate. The water is cold and startlingly clear, the mountainsides drop straight into it, and the coves are narrow and steep.

Several waterfalls spill into the lake along its northern arms, and the only way to see them up close is from the water. Plenty of people plan the whole day as their own waterfall boat tour, at their own pace.

How strongly the falls are running depends on recent rain, so we’ll talk through a good route when you call.

The launch

Devils Fork State Park

All Jocassee trips leave from Devils Fork, the state park on the lake’s southern shore. We’ll meet you at the ramp, show you around the boat, and send you off.

The park is the busiest spot on the lake on summer weekends, so earlier really is better here. To see what the launch currently looks like and to get an idea of the lake view, you can see a live camera view below!

Weather

Plan around the afternoon storms

Summer afternoons on Jocassee often bring a thunderstorm, usually somewhere between noon and three. The mountains build them quickly, and they tend to move through just as fast.

When one rolls in, do what the locals do: pull up to a dock or beach the boat in a sheltered cove, wait it out, and head back out once it clears. Starting early gives you the calmest hours first.

Hatched: most likely storm window

We keep an eye on the forecast and are glad to go over it with you before your trip. If a storm really does cut your day short, call us and we’ll work something out for another day, depending on how much of your day you got.
